Mission Statement
The mission of The POGIL Project is to connect and support educators from all disciplines interested in implementing, improving, and studying student-centered pedagogies and learning environments.
Vision
We envision an educational system in which effective student-centered instruction is the norm.
Values
We believe that:
- students learn best when they are given an opportunity to construct their own understanding;
- student-to-student interaction is an important part of the learning process;
- the strongest learning environments promote shared responsibility between instructors and students;
- a POGIL learning environment is broadly applicable and effective in accomplishing a variety of important learning goals;
- growth in relevant and appropriate process skills in the context of a POGIL learning environment promotes growth in students as learners;
- assessment is a process designed to improve future performance, so effective assessment is the key to continual improvement.
We strive to:
- support educators’ diverse classroom goals by developing, assessing, and disseminating materials that simultaneously develop content knowledge and key process skills;
- promote an understanding of education research so that educators from diverse backgrounds and disciplines can network to improve education as a whole;
- improve teaching and learning;
- promote ongoing professional growth through the scholarship of teaching and learning ;
- practice what we preach by using active learning methods in our faculty development workshops and in our classrooms.
The POGIL Project Long Term Goals
- To find continuing financial support to fulfill the mission of the Project.
- Provide structured support for continuing profession development within the educational community.
- Provide structured support that would allow members to develop materials for classroom use.
- Expand the "universe" of membership: we want members from all disciplines, from different levels of teaching experience, from different types of educational institutions, and from different ethnic or cultural backgrounds.
- To contribute to the body of work happening around the country that will make student and learning-centered approaches to teaching the norm.
- Provide a "laboratory" for education researchers; connect researchers with teachers and classrooms for study.
