A one day POGIL/SWH chemistry Laboratory workshop for general chemistry and organic chemistry instructors will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Iowa State University, Department of Chemistry, Ames, Iowa in Rooms 1227 and 1207, 1208 Hach Hall. Faculty from two-year institutions, universities and colleges are invited to attend. POGIL (Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) and SWH (the Science Writing Heuristic) are two complementary approaches to laboratory work that follow a three-stage learning cycle and involve active learning and guided inquiry. In response to a question posed by the instructor (POGIL) or questions developed by the students (SWH) students work in teams to gather data from experiments run under a variety of conditions. They examine the pooled data from which they construct theories and make claims that can be backed up by the experimental results. Group discussions, reflective writing, and in some cases additional experiments are used to further develop the concepts. Participants in this workshop will examine model POGIL and SWH experiments, work in groups with student-generated data in a simulated laboratory setting, do a "wet hands-on" laboratory experiment in groups, and write a sample POGIL/SWH lab report. The goal is to have participants understand the main components of POGIL and SWH approach to laboratory work and to gain insights into the value of group work. URLs:

An Intermediate POGIL/SWH component of the workshop will be offered for participants who have implemented POGIL/SWH with their students. Participants in the intermediate component of the workshop will work in groups to convert existing and currently used laboratory activities to POGIL or SWH experiments.
The workshop will be held 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Workshop participants should bring copies of their laboratory manual for review and analysis. Registration, lunch, and materials are paid for by the grant. Participants register for this workshop through the POGIL web site:
