Pogil - Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning

About the ANA-POGIL Project

The ANA-POGIL project is funded by a four year, half-million dollar NSF grant (DUE # 0717492) entitled: "A New Approach to Analytical Chemistry: The Development of Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning Materials." The Principal Investigator is Juliette Lantz (Drew University) and the Co-Principal Investigator is Renee Cole (University of Central Missouri).

The intent of this project is to develop a set of POGIL materials that will impart widely accepted analytical chemistry principles while engaging students as active learners, facilitating their development in the process skills that are essential to analytical chemists in particular and valuable to scientists in general. These classroom activities can be used collectively in traditional analytical chemistry courses or used individually in a variety of other courses that include analytical chemistry concepts. To develop these materials, a team of ten analytical chemists from various institutions will convene over a four-year period to write, test and assess these guided-inquiry materials with the full participation of two chemical education researchers. During the third and fourth year, beta-testing will begin at five additional institutions. The overall evaluation of this project will include peer and student assessment of the written materials, assessment of student learning, student attitudes and student process skills.
